Institutional racism (or structural racism or systemic racism) refers to a form of racism which occurs specifically in institutions such as public bodies, corporations, and universities. The term was coined by black nationalist, pan-Africanist and honorary prime minister of the Black Panther Party, Stokely Carmichael. In the late 1960s, he defined the term as "the collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture or ethnic origin".[1]

I think that the problem of "intitutional racism" is not nearly as bad as social racism. There isn't really much "intitutional racism", for instance, you can't be turned down for a job according to the "intitution", but it happens. Why? Because of individual racists that are doing the interviews. Up until recently, racism and discrimination were an big part of the way american was run, however due to the anti-discrimination laws that are now in place, we need to focus our energy on day to day racism.(but it still is hanging on though)

Teachers, parents, religious leaders, political leaders, and other responsible persons must set the tone. Not only racial, but ethnic and religious hatred will never completely end. It is mankind's everlasting battle against one of the evils that plague us. You too must learn to walk silently away from those who spout this filth.

When I was in grade school our teacher lead us to the study of the social system in India at that time. When we were told of the untouchables we thought is was terrible. Then we were told about the segregation that existed at that time in our country.. It left an impact.

When I was in my 20's I was riding in a truck with a displaced person (from Europe), A truck went by with the name of the small business operator on the side of the truck. The displaced person said,"Did you see that? That name? His ancestors were slaves." Perhaps all our ancestors were slaves or serfs. That may be why they came here.

I think we need to make race less of an issue. Discrimination laws lead to reverse discrimination and resentment and racism. I think race should not be an issue with any laws and people will stop noticing skin color as much.
