Up until I just read this article, I thought nothing of reusing plastic bottles. Do you?
Here's a good link if you are interested.

Yes I reuse them.

I used to drink tap water but then I moved into the city... Where I reside now the tap water has enough chemicals in it (both naturally occurring and added) that I cannot stand the taste.

I buy filtered water in reusable bulk bottles and refill half liter bottles from them. The half liter bottles are washed between fillings and used four times then put into the recycle bin.

My reason for using the small bottles is that as a Law Enforcement Chaplain I find myself going into homes, (and having to spend time in them), where I don't even want to touch the floor with feet that are encased in shoes let alone drink from a tap or container found there.

I am already a cancer survivor (since 1954) and have decided that I'm going to live until I die and whatever IS my cause of death, there is one thing it will not be... WORRY!

Sounds like a load of crap to me but if you're going to be reusing a water bottle you might as well invest in something sturdy like the obligatory Nalgene bottle. Nalgene also makes many plastic products for lab use so I can nearly guarantee you that they are indeed built to last under even harsh conditions.

Yes
I read the link before I answered.
It seems to me that just about everything causes cancer these days.
I usually drink tap water and only use bottles occasionally.
I feel that we live in such a sterilized sanitized world that we are depriving our bodies of the practice our systems need to cope with bacteria, allergens etc.
Its like when they improved flour by removing all the wholemeal etc.
I do not doubt that certain carcinogenic chemicals could be leached from old bottles as I do not doubt that something unkown else is also doing it and always will.
I have rainwater tanks but drink the tap water from the water board reservoir, I see whats in the rainwater!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew about a lot of the information in that article, but I admit I do reuse them sometimes. We also have the water bottles used for hiking they were mentioning. That was a good article, I'm going to send the link to my daughter, she's taking Environmental Science and we are interested in info like this. Thanks.

Okay, that was scarey. So everything except recyclable plastics numbered 2, 4 & 5 are unsafe? Going by the contents of my own shelves and fridge, all drinks from soda pop to power juices are packaged in #1 containers...does this make them unsafe? Or just unsafe for reuse?

Hey...what a concept...get rid of plastics entirely!

I didn't reuse store water bottles because of this. I do have a Nalgene I reuse, some how I didn't connect the two. I thiiught it was bacteria so I could put the nalgene in the dish washer. Thanks for the heads up. I won't be using it anymore. I will be making a quick call to the kids too.

No, not plastic bottles but I'm
freaky about keeping glass
jars. I wash them out and store them on a shelf, thinking they will all be good for something. I now have a shelf full of jars and use maybe one or two. What's that about?
Do I have a jar fetish?

Milk from plastic containers used to make me nauseated as a child. My mom had to switch back to the coated cardboard containers. Well the truthis we never really know what is out there and what we are putting into our bodies.

NO, I do not drink water from /sold in plastic bottles. Tap water in the US is plenty good enough for all purposes. Bottled water is a total waste of money, and if you have noticed, water that is sitting around in these bottles, after a while, tastes funny...that can only be attributed to the plastic giving off chemicals...no thanks. I have never understood the craze of buying bottled water when perfectly good tap water is avaialbe. Peace
