You want to get the X by itself. So first you subtract 2x from both sides. (remember, if you do something to both sides, the equation remains equal). Then you subtract 19 from both sides. Then you divide by 3, which leaves the x alone.

2x-4=5x+19
-2x
-4=3x+19
-19
-23=3x
/3
-23/3=x

so X= -23/3

First, isolate the variable (make sure the terms with 'x' are all on one side and all numbers on other side)

To do this, subtract 5x from both sides:

2x-4=5x+19

2x-5x-4=19

Add '4' to both sides:

2x-5x = 19 +4

Combine terms:

-3x = 23

divide -3 from both sides:

x = 23/-3

Okay,
First of all, you have to put all the x on one side and all the numbers on another side.
2x-4 = 5x+19
(To put the x on one side, minus 5x on both sides)
2x-4 = 5x+19 (-5x on both sides)
2x - 4 - 5x = 5x +19-5x
-3x-4 = 19
(Now you have to put all the numbers on one side, to do that, you have you add 4 on both sides)
-3x-4 = 19 (+4 on both sides)
-3x-4+4 = 19+4
-3x = 23
(Now you have to remove -3 from x, to do this, you have to divide -3 on both sides)
-3x = 23 (divide -3 on both sides)
-3x/-3 = 23/-3
x = 23/-3 = -7 2/3

Remember, when you want to make the term/number go on the other side, just do the contrary of its sign, i.e: + becomes - and * becomes /

I can't give you an example right now but I hope that my explications are clear so that you can understand how to work this equation

very simple.
in any equation you can add (or subtract) any number you like to both sides and it'll still be equal (or divide both sides by the same number). so you can subtract 5x from both sides. this leaves 2x -4 -5x = 5x + 19 - 5x
simplify that to -3x-4 = 19
then add 4 to both sides, leaving -3x = 23
divide both sides by minus three.
That leaves x = -23/3

Not too sure what you want when you say an example...

Get rid of the 2x on the left hand side and subtract the same on the right, so..

-4 = 3x + 19

Then subtract 19 from both sides to get 3x...

-23 = 3x

x = -23/3

Put like terms on one side:
2x - 5x = 19 + 4
-3x = 23
x = -7.67

2007-11-12 16:59:15 · answer #7 · answered by WT 4 · 1 1

2x-4=5x+19
move all the numbers to one side by adding 4 to both sides:
2x=5x+23
now move the x's across to the other side by subtracting 5x from both sides:
-3x=23
now to get x divide both sides by -3 to give:
x=-23/3

2x-4=5x+19
1st: add four to both sides : 2x=5x+23
then: now you have x on its own on one side take 5x from both sides : 2x-5x=23
-3x=23
now you know what -3x is 23, you divide x by -3, as well as 23 (what ever you do [-+*/] do to both sides
x=23/-3
x=7.66

i hope i have done it all right lol thats how i would do these
