*A useful tip to make sure you always have your bookmarks is to use an online bookmark service to export your bookmarks to, that way you will always have access to them

OOo... hard luck! If you had a copy of Opera you might TRY importing bookmarks from Firefox and then exporting them again to a file and then importing that file into Firefox...and by some fluke, Opera may have found an old copy of the pre-deleted bookmarks.

In the future, I'd suggest you get a gmail account, and use Google to store your favorites on the Google toolbar. That way, (1) your favorites are stored online, and you can get to them from any computer, anywhere where you log on to your gmail account, and (2) in my case, I'm a true klutz, so it was a help to me to have that Google copy as a protection against my fatfingering and careless file deletions on my own computer...an extra layer of protection...and a bit protected from the whims of Firefox

There is no way to recover it on the same browser. If you have another browser and you stored the same favorites there then you can uninstall and reinstall firefox and it will ask you to import favorites from the other browser.
