Why do people say that 9/11 was a lie?

Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention, but I don't understand why or how anyone could say that. I'm sure we could have prevented it, but that doesn't necessarily mean the government was behind it.

People say 9/11 was a "lie" because they believe the ridiculous theory that our own government actually did 9/11.

Of course 9/11 is not a "lie": It was an attack on the US by Al Qaeda terrorists.

To support this, I’ll address a few points made in the answers:

THE TOWERS DID NOT COLLAPSE FROM “FIRE ALONE”

The towers mainly collapsed due to the large number of supports being knocked out by the jets. The fires only helped. No other building had STRUCTURAL DAMAGE plus fire and stood.

WTC7 DID NOT COLLAPSE AT “FREE FALL SPEEDS INTO ITS OWN FOOT PRINT

Actually, the roof first developed a huge “kink” seen in all the photos. Then the east side slumped and this pulled down the rest of the building. It was certainly slower than “free fall” and did not go into its own footprint.

THE INTERNET FILM “LOOSE CHANGE” IS A COLLECTION OF DISTORTIONS

OPERATION NORTHWOODS NEVER TOOK PLACE
It was considered during the Cold War when thermonuclear weapons in Cuba were pointed at us. World War Three almost started. So someone thought of invading Cuba after creating a fake scenario. Since we rejected the idea then, I guess we would reject the idea now. It argues against a fake attack.

Yes, our government has lied in the past. So has every person and every government. This doesn't mean that it is capable of heinous mass murder.

Go watch the evidence yourself - look at the latest "loose change" video on youtube and watch the entire thing before you can form an opinion. If you have not seen the evidence in the case then obviously you can't have an opinion.

Not a lie, but many would argue that there was/is a lot of information that the government was/is hiding, and a lot of evidence for this.

how are you able to declare a element like that! Are you anti American? because of the fact in case you're you're in basic terms as undesirable because of the fact the terrorists. Inocent lives have been misplaced that day and you will't denigh how many peoples lives have been misplaced! Because there are people in this country that have nothing else to do but invent fallacy and hope that it becomes truth.

Negativity and contrarianism is all they accept. When there is none they create it.

Everyone reading this must know people whose political thinking is similarly tainted by, if not utterly based on, conspiracy theories at least as insane as that. Go out and persuade them. Persuade them not only that their particular conspiracy theory doesn't make sense but that the underlying world view isn't true. That it is no more than a nasty little fantasy that is hurting and crippling them even as it offers them the specious simplicity and comfort of blaming others. That the world is better than that and that if they choose to, they can be part of its improving further. Persuade them because in the long run, if you fail to persuade them, they will kill you.

The lie, is that Big Brother is not telling the truth about the whole 9/11 story. Being formerly in the military I do know this.

The U.S. public is on a "need to know basis and they don't need to know". Certain information cannot and will not be made public for whatever reason.

Hell, information from Kennedy and Roswell has been pushed under the carpet for 40 and 50 years.

Look at the evidence. Bush did very little, but used the event to launch his own agenda. If you want to know who is the most likely guilty party, just look who had the most to gain. It wasn't the terrorists. No, 9/11 was not a lie. It really did happen and it was evil. The lies came soon after. Because of it, were there to be another act of terrorism on our soil, I doubt the people will listen, even if it is in their best interest, because Bush proved that our best interest is not the same as our government's. We are on our own people.

Because it's not enough of a conspiracy to them that a bunch of low-tech muscle hijackers armed with box cutters managed to bring down the towers, damage the pentagon and kill thousands of people... bypassing the security in the airports of the world's premiere superpower to do so.
No, that's not a good enough story... they need more.
Truthfully, the very fact that this hairbrained and totally ridiculous theory is championed by the utterly moronic Rosie O'Donnell herself should tell you that only the whackiest of the whackjobs take it at all seriously.

It wasn't a lie, however some people believe in a conspiracy theory.
So people will have to make up their own mind on that.
In my opinion is it ridiculous that a government would murder thousands of their own people.
People who say it is a lie need to visit families that have lost people due to 9/11
