I'm going to Turkey in January and I'm wondering what it is like there, food, culture, etc. Also, my parents recently redid our house and my mom wants something to put in the house as a decoration, but I have no idea what Turkey is known for. Art? Rugs? Any advice from people who have been there or know about the country would be much appreciated!

If you're looking for home decoration, you'd be spoilt for choice. The turkish arts and crafts reflect inter-miglinging of cultural influences throughout its history, particularly as an important post along the Silk Road. Choose from colorful lamps, antique copper art, wooden mosaic boxes, beautiful tiles, vases and plates painted with flowery designs, meerschaum pipes and of course, the rustic turkish rugs!

Look into a few shops for an idea of the price and then bargain down to what you're willing to pay. The antiques are a little tricky and you can't always believe their claims of authenticity. I have heard that an antique vendor in Kapali Carsi sold fake warrior swords to tourists at ridiculous amount of money. So keep your wits about you. Scrutinize the products you're going to buy in case of flaws or defect. The seller will tell you that it's natural as they were hand-made. You can either accept that or keep looking til you find something you're satisifed with. If the items are big, try to buy and get them shipped before you leave the city.
