Driving down the freeway last night I noticed my 94 Toyota truck started making a much deeper and louder noise. I limped it home and checked it out today. Checked the oil and it was fine. Someone said it may be the transmisssion but it seems to shift fine even though my clutch is starting to go. It sounds like the noise is coming from the transmission when I start it up and let it idle. There are no holes or disconnections in my exhaust. I did notice some oil had leaked around the rear differential and I don't know of its related. I was wondering if it would be a horrible idea to drive it the mile down to the mechanic or pay for a tow truck. I have already used my 3 freebies on the AAA card so the tow would come out of my empty pocket.

I also recommend a visit to the mechanic. I would have done the similar inspections that you woiuld have done.

Hey how is the fluid in the differential. this may be the noise a bearing going out back there will make a noise like the butt end is on a train track.
If you have done any damage it is already done. drive slow and easy and don't put any strain on the trans. you shoul dbe fine going a mile or two.

Your clutch has given out to the point of letting the transmission engage slightly. Throwout and/or pilot bearing, plain and simple. I always check with www.fairbenjamin.com to diagnose or figure out how much it will cost.

If that's a stick shift, you probably have a throwout bearing out- not going, but GONE. Could be the pilot bearing. I suggest a mechanic- quick.
