Wood planks are fairly common. You'll soon find that you have an overflow of them. In the meantime, if you need some immediately you can buy from other players or salvage materials from junky weapon drops that you find.
If buying from other players, be sure you don't get ripped off. Check the buy and sell prices from the materials trader in town and offer to buy the wood for a price somewhere in between.

Salvage things like bows or if you have the cash, you can purchase them from a vendor if you don't have time to salvage.
