the battery on my 91 mercury topaz wont hold a charge and the alternator belt keeps breaking. We had the alternator checked and its fine so the only other thing that could be the problem is the power steering. right? so we are going to get a new one but its 22 dollars cheaper if we bring in the old one before we buy the new one. so i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to remove it. any other observations about this problem would help too. thanks

also, when i try to turn the pulley on the power steering it is impossible to move. is this pulley supposed to be able to spin or does it need to have power running through it?

the second pulley that i was told was connected to the power steering has another belt connected to it as well. do u know what this belt is for and could it contribute to the pulley not spinning on its own?

The pulleys are pressed on, so you can either let the shop do it for you, or you can borrow the tool to do it yourself, having done a few pulleys, I would vote for letting them press the old one off and the new one on.
In so much as the pulley turning freely, if the pulley is not turning at all with the belt off, this is confirmation as to replacing the power steering pump and will certainly explain why the belts continue to break.

The pullet without a belt on it should turn free,
to remove take off the two hoses. be careful as you will drain the reservoir so put the low pressure hose (clamped on) higher than the pump and take off a couple of bolts and it comes right out.
Make sure the new pump has a pulley on it, if not the store will press it off and on for you. then when you re-assemble you need to fill the res. then run it with the cap off keeping it full but not too full this will growl a while and may be foamy for a bit. that is OK. It will go away but KEEP FLUID IN IT!

i will think of which you have a small block V8.you opt for a puller to eliminate the capability steerage pulley.Then there are 3 bolts conserving the pump on the bracket and a few have one hidden on the back area below the exhaust manifold.It takes some fooling around yet you slide the pump out then you definitely can attain the bolts that carry the bracket on.factors shops will on occasion hire you approaches.you will choose a gadget to eliminate the pulley and yet another to place in it.
