This would dramatically decrease crime. Do you agree that this would be ideal? The only people who disagree are those that have something to hide.

We really need to get over this one. The terrorist survielence program is an essential tool to fight terrorism and only target suspect from overseas making calls into America.

Of course we could talk about the FBI under Johnson spying on dissident groups - liberals spying on liberals wow.

wow.. the only people that disagree are those that have something to hide? How very naive of you. How about those that would rather protect personal liberty? And you think it would decrease crime? Anytime the government tries to regulate something in our private lives it INCREASES crime.. point in case.. the Prohibition. (Since there's a chance you don't know what it is/caused... when the government banned alcohol people started making it and selling it as a black market commodity.. and the mafia was born from this). So what in the history of our government makes you think that spying on us would lessen crime? People tend to fight against such things out of spite if nothing else.

Now.. on a final note.. our government is set up on the principle of checks and balances... who's keeping them in line if they can spy on us whenever they want?

As it is right now.. the government can spy on anyone they want anytime they want.. they just have to be able to prove it as justifiable. And what is wrong with keeping them accountable?

Edit: it would NOT decrease crime... all they have to do outside their home is wear a mask (gas stations have cameras and they get knocked off all the time).

Inside the home is un-Constitutional.

You want to decrease crime? then you increase education and decrease unemployment... educated people who can get a job rarely commit petty crimes.

I think there are two sides. First, spying on us takes away most of our freedom. There would be no place that you could be safe from people watching you. People might be afraid to do something in their own home. Some might become paranoid. There are some things people do that are completely personal and they should be able to do without fear of being judged. On the other hand, it would decrease crime, but how would they spy on everyone in America? I just don't think it would work.

I think the government, has an obligation to protect us from foreign intervention. So intercepting overseas communications ,or keeping tabs on people in this country that are not yet citizens,is a viable function of our government. To spy on citizens of the United States without oversight from the Judiciary is wrong and illegal. That is what our Bill of Rights is for.to protect us from arbitrary searches.

The problem is that governments do not always do what they claim to do, they are far more interested in protecting their own interests than decreasing crime.

A fearful nation is much easier to govern

The cameras would we used to suppress dissent, and to monitor their opposition.

Should the government spy on us? They already are spying on us. The only issue is what do they do with their massive downloads.

I think you need to be educated on what can be done with private information before you decide it would be "ideal". Seriously, how long do you think it will be before political dissidents are arrested and shipped to gulags like Guantanamo.

Only for national security reasons. The average American shouldn't be spied on just to "decrease crime". There are better ways to decrease crime than putting cameras up all over the place or having the government listen to you talk to your grandma on her birthday.

Yes, they should be allowed to do whatever it takes to keep us safe. This means safe against terrorism, scam artists, and financial terrorists. The people who are being monitored are not just middle eastern terrorists, but people from our own country who are committing crimes such as money laundering, embezzlement, and fraud.

Only is rare circumstances where law enforcement authorities believe you are going to committ a terrorist act, similar to what the Patriot act states. Since I'm not a terrorist, it doesnt affect me.
