Chickens do fly, but only in low heights.
Well, you can't blame the chickens. They started out flying, after all. At least their ancestors did. The ancestor of modern chickens, the wild red jungle fowl (also a darn good name for a rock band), wasn't a great flier, but he could get around when he had to. The entire poultry family (chickens, turkeys, guineas, ducks) are adapted to living on the ground. Their beaks are better adapted to pecking off the ground, their feet to walking instead of perching, and their wings are smaller than other birds their size.

It all had to do with genetics. Chickens descended from a long line of birds. Over time, these birds had to adapt most likely because of areal predators or the facilitation of finding food on the ground. This forced these birds to evolve into chickens. Technically chickens cant fly but they can propel themselves of the ground with their wings and could survive a long drop.

Roosters use wings to balance while impregnating hens. Someone once developed a wingless chicken, no wings means increased tenderness of the breast meat, but the birds could not reproduce.
The moral of the story is, you don't have to fly to have fun with wings.

Chickens can't fly is a myth. I witnessed one fly from dogs chasing it. It flew over a house and landed in the backyard. I didn't think they could myself until I saw that one being chased by the dogs

Chickens fly better than ostriches - and they have wings too. Chickens don't fly very well but they do fly well enough to get to their roosts every night.

They're almost vestigial organs at this point... they *can* achieve a bit of flight (like a good flight would be eight to twelve feet through the air).
Lots of vestigial organs exist amongst animals... ostriches have wings but will never take flight... humans have appendixes & toe-nails which don't really serve any practical function anymore... some snakes still have remnants of legs... as do some whales. Evolution takes a LONG time

As chickens evolved, they began with functional wings, but gradually lost the use of them as they developed in other areas. Now their wings are like our appendix; they used to have a use but are no longer needed. However, chickens to occasionally use them for short, skimming flights to escape prowling cats or curious children (I have seen both as I have lived on a farm for most of my life).

Because they were born that way?
And I've seen chickens fly.
Or just skim the ground.
SO...
IDK.
