It depends what the whole number and the fraction are?

1 + 1/2 = 1 1/2

2 + 3/4 = 2 3/4

2 + 5/4 = 3 1/4

It is called a mixed fraction
1 1/2 = 1 + 1/2
You can convert it to the improper fraction 3/2.

n = numerator of fraction
d = denominator of fraction

w + n/d
= wd/d + n/d
= (wd + n)/d
