Neither of 2 batteries I have has a label that indicates its type, but a charger I just bought requires that I push a button to make a choice. The old battery has two rectangular caps on top, but I don't think they're supposed to come off, so its probably maintenance-free. The new one has nothing similar to that on its top. How do I know which is the safe setting?

Most lawn tractor batts are wet. If you are in doubt call the place that you bought it. Or go to the battery manufactor's website. All of the batteries that I have had for my tractors have had the two caps on top, they do come off and you can monitor the level of the liquid. Gel batts are usually way more expensive than wet batts.
