my understanding is that it's the area in front of stage for a rock concert where strange men somehow invite others to dance wildly around them while they punch each other and fall on each other as painfully as possible.

Moshing basically is an expression of music by the crowd at a concert/gig. It occurs when bands usually of the rock, punk and metal genres play in a live setting. Now it's difficult to explain the essence of the mosh pit without completely underplaying it. But I'll try. At these gigs, members of the crowd will gather at the front and will furiously and passionately shove/ push/ body slam each other in time to the music. But the idea is not to cause any harm to each other( even though that's usually the case ) but just to enjoy the music in a less passive way, like you would if you were to dance to any type of music. But its better than just a dance , much better.

Mosh pit- the area immediately surrounding the band at a concert. Many people smashed in together dancing, drinking, drugging and whatever else they can get away with. People sometimes will throw themselves into the pit and be carried across the area by all the people holding them up. Can be dangerous best left to the young and foolish.

Moshing is a type of dance characterized by audience members aggressively pushing or slamming into each other. It is frequently if not invariably accompanied by stage diving, crowd surfing, and/or headbanging, though incarnations of the dance are specific to music genre, scene, and era. It is commonly associated with heavy metal, punk, ska punk, and hardcore punk music genres, but has expanded into more popular rock genres as well. Moshing primarily takes place at live shows, though it can be done to recorded music, too.[1]
Today, many variations of moshing exist, such as "thrash"[2], and the dance is practiced at concerts of many musical genres. Moshing is typically done in a mosh pit or circle pit.

When you go to a concert and you jump into a crowd of people and slam yourself against each other....the stupidest thing I have ever heard of, but hey, have fun.
Moshing is a type of dance characterized by jumping around and or pushing others to loud punk, hardcore, and heavy metal music. Moshing is popular with many, especially young, fans. Moshing is also gaining popularity in the Rap and Breakcore (a genre of extreme electronic dance music) scenes.

"Moshing" or "Slam-Dancing" is a physically agressive form of self expression to emotions produced by some styles of music, usually some form of punk and/or metal fusion. The "Mosh-Pit" is an area on the arena floor or grounds where the "mosh" erupts.

Rock bands have a group of sweaty teenagers (or, whoever of w/e age) throwing themselves against each other..or they could just stand there, but the verb "mosh" suggests that you're dancing rather violently. These are "floor seats"..no seats, just floor, but mosh pits don't really exist outside of rock concerts, as it's rock that motivates that kind of movement

The part of the audience that's right in front of the stage, standing & dancing, usually slam-dancing and people body-surfing above them. It's the group of people, not their location, that is the mosh pit.
