That's a harsh one. Elderly people sometimes don't have very good manners, and think they are the judge and jury of the whole world.
Tell them that's not acceptable, and you're not going to eat with them in a public place anymore if they do it again. Bring along a black friend the next time they invite you to eat - even better!

Despite the desire to respect ones elders I think it is ok to say to that person "That is considered to be a very hurtful and objectionable word in our society today" I would appreciate it if you didn't use that nasty term when I am with you. Not only because it is disrespectful but also because it could cause us to be the target of violence.

shout "WHERE?" real loud and jump out of your seat.
Seriously, if the person has alzheimers or some such condition that affects the impulses try to brush it off, if they are just a bigot, then its never too late to learn. Tell them you don't want to eat with an old bigot.

Funny you would bring this up as it happened to me. I was with my grandmother at a local mall that just opened up in early 1982ish. We were in the food court when she popped off "what is that N looking at???!!!"
Getting upset isn't really the answer because, as with my granny, Alzheimer's could be the culprit. I just calmly looked at her and said me, now knock it off or you're gonna get my butt kicked because yelling out the N word isn't really nice. she laughed about it, i apologized to the guy and we went our way.

I'd probably gasp and then look around to make sure nobody heard and then scold them. Or yell at them in whisper volume.
By the way, for the dense few above, it's spelled "tourettes".

You have to read 'The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid' by Bill Bryson.
He has a great story about this.

Politely shhssh them, then say something like "Gran that's not nice", then look around the room and apologize. Most people will overlook a very elderly persons comments.

That is one word with 2 blades. In all honesty, correct the individual, then apologize, and leave quickly, hoping you aren't followed.

Blush and explain quietly your views on the N word. You do not want to embarrass them like they embarrassed you.
