First off my name is Courtney and I'm 19. Just over two weeks ago I was in a car accident while on my way home from a halloween party. I suffered major neck and head trauma as a result of the accident, and I also fractured both my wrists. I leave the hospital in five days, just in time to be home for Thanksgiving.

For the past three years I've gone shopping on Black Friday and I don't want a stupid accident to keep me from going this year. I'm able to walk just fine but I'm really insecure about going out because of how I currently look.

I'm currently sporting this lovely brace http://www.ossur.com/lisalib/getfile.aspx?itemid=10669 in support of my broken neck and spinal cord injuries, and I'm also sporting two arm casts to help heal my broken wrists.

I wouldn't mind going out if I just had the arm casts, but I'm really insecure about going out in that stupid brace. Everyone's going to be staring at me, what do I do???

Well, Honey- Some years ago I was mugged, nearly killed. And I can assure you, I looked awful. Once I felt up to it and was able to go back home, I was back to normal- except for some very nasty scars.

Don't sweat it: It's not that bad. If anyone comments, either they are concerned but don't know how to express it, or they have very small minds.

Feel better, and enjoy your shopping!

Sorry to hear about your accident. Live your life and who gives a F*%#k what anyone else thinks!! If anyone stares, and you feel like it, tell them - I was in an accident. Most people will be understanding.

Please go see a psychologist. It is normal for anyone to be hesitant to go out into the traffic again after any sort of accident, especially one where you have suffered injuries.

They can help you address your fears and return to your normal activities quicker.
