It looks like so much fun.

My parents were perfect at this dance...taught Moi and then I taught various dates over the years...best tune I can remember from parental units' fave platter was "That's-a-Plenty" which had a beat for every step--most other tunes you had to do two steps in between the beats ... why this happy dance was banned in NC probably coincides with other stuff banned along the same lines at the same time... the clammy grip of grim-jawed preachers perhaps?

Here's how it went. I learned at 11 by holding a doorknob practicing with Dick Clark, watching it done. It was called the "fast dance". Then my mother said it was the same thing as the "jitterbug". Then from a cousin who routinely traveled to SOUTH Carolina, that it was called the "shag", and was done to "beach music". I've never known which was right, loved doing it, still can, but don't know anybody else who can. News to me too, that NC forbade it. There's nothing sexual about it. Also, it can be done to anything rock and roll, unless the beat is too fast, in which case you do it on the second beat.

It is a variation of the swing, lots of suggestive moves that are fun to watch..has had a rebirth in the last 5 years, very much like the West Coast Swing, except not done in a slot. (2'X10' Area on the floor. The shag was popular to accomodate small dance floors in bars, where as swing takes a lot of room. Phil And, LIke Boston, everything, at one time or another, was banned in the Carolinas!

We used to shag some when we'd go out dancing. We've never taken lessons though, but I think they would be fun. I didn't know it was once forbidden in NC.

Shagging is alive and well in South Carolina. They have the music and the bars right on the waterfront too. I am clueless as to why it would be banned, it is a lovely dance.

I am with Chip Monk on this one. I have "shagged out" of a few places before when the cops were coming. LOL

The only way I've heard that term was to "shag a$$" meaning to git the H*** out of here quick.

I never learned how to shag. But I do Swing dance. I always thought of Shag as "lazy" Swing.

Never shagged either. Could you tell us what it is and why it was forbidden.

Do you know what this means in the UK? I don't think so! Let me give you a clue. Horizontal dancing. The beast with two humps. Having it off.Sleeping together. Starting to get the picture? You are right though. It is fun!
