To know which side is the low pressure area ,you have to keep your back to the wind.Read the followig law about the relationship between wind and pressure.
The Buys Ballot's law states that if an observer stands with his back to the wind,in the Northern hemisphere, the low pressure area will be to his left and in the Sothern hemisphere,it will be to his right.
When you go to beach in a hot summer day,you would like to face the cool sea-breeze instead of keeping the back to the wind.On the other hand if there are strong winds and if you are not able to stand on your feet, you would naturally like to keep your back to the wind so that you can run away for shelter. So, it depends upon the situation.

Most animals do this when possible. Heat is lost more slowly from the back than the front so it saves energy.
