I am a server, and at my restaurant the occasional survey will print up on a guests check. The call in type that turnes into a coupon after you complete the survey.

This is a really big thing for the chain I work for. When one is printed, the manager on duty is required to walk it to the table and explain it to the guest. And with our surveys, we strive to get all 5's (which is the highest score possible). Otherwise, we've basically failed the survey.

We have been failing in one specific area - making the guest feel special. So, what makes you feel special? (when dining out)

This is beyond getting a server who is friendly and speedy. Getting good food. A clean establishment. All of these things are already addressed on the survey, while feeling special a whole different question.

I'm looking for things to use and do.

Personal attention, being treated like I'm the most important person in the restaurant, even though at the same time you are treating everyone else that way also.
Are you glad I'm coming in to dine at your restaurant? Let me know.
Do you want to wait on me and provide excellent service? Show me.
What do you want from me? An okay tip, okay comments on your survey? Or an excellent tip and excellent comments on your service?
Be creative, be fair, be polite and try your best! Excellent service can make up for mediocore food.

i always enjoy when the server is cheerful, above friendly, and spends time chatting at the table. it seems to put all of us more at ease and eating then becomes a more enjoyable experience. also, when asking for items not present at the table, i.e. condiments, or information on the menu or buffet items, it is always more pleasant when the server addresses these things right away, not when they can work it in. i understand that sometimes restaurants can be busy and the server does not have much time, but this can also be true of the patrons. i always tip every server, but may give more to an exceptional server and fill out the survey. i have even, at times, hunted down the manager, seater, and greeter to compliment very good service. i hope this helps. tc.

When we go to our favorite place, every server knows us. We're not bothered with perusing the menu or waiting a long time for our meal. They simply ask us if there are any changes, we say no. On week-ends we call ahead for a table, they place our order and we just walk in, sit down and our food arrives in less than 5 mins.
This makes us feel valued and special.

People feel special while dining out if:
1. you talk to my children and keep them in mind (ask if you can bring their food first to keep them busy, bring them crayons, bring extra cherries in their Shirley temple)
2. remember them if you have waited on them before
3. the manager comes by and asks specific questions (ie - what did you think of the salmon?)
4. you remember to bring my ranch dressing or whatever,
5. I am celebrating something special - ask about it, bring dessert etc
I hope this helps! Good Luck!
6. Go out of your way to recommend something (ie. that salmon is really good if you add cheese or whatever)

They just leave you with a feeling that you really want to come back again, because you felt everything was right and you got a good deal there!

Ok, I have no answer but I just wanted to say thank you for answering my question on my ankle. I don't know how I hurt it a while ago but I think it is hurting again because I landed on it wrong at a carnival. ttyl
