If you are to cover old plaster etc then a uni bond coat and plaster setting coat should be used. If a more robust existing coating is present then a uni bond/ plaster bonding and setting coat should be used. This is a job for a professional so get a couple of quotes from a qualified trades person.

The key is not to over do it. Hit the low spots first and any gouges, scrapes, holes, ...ect. Turn off the lights and get a flashlight up close to the wall and sight down it for anything you might have missed. Prime your wall, and repeat the lighting process. Point up any remaing low spots you see, and re-prime spots and paint. Thats the easiest way I can explain it to ya, buddy. Good luck
