Our son is almost 5 months old, he has now started rolling over, and everytime we lay him down he hates it, its like he tries to do sit ups!!! hes also gotten very attached and cries whenever hes set down or left alone. How can we break this?? what is your baby doing or did at this age? When will he start to sit on his own and when will he start crawling? Whats the average time line :) THANKS!!

At 5 months our daughter could sit up with support. We used a Bumbo seat to sit her up for feedings and some play.

(Bumbo Seat is the one that was recently recalled because people who use it did unsafe things -- it's perfectly safe if you only use it in places where you'd set the baby anyway, like, on the floor. It holds baby in a sitting position so he can strengthen his sitting-up muscles and get ready to sit up on his own. It's nice because you don't have to hold him up, and he can enjoy the sitting perspective without a risk of falling over backwards and hitting his head on the floor ... although that will happen when he starts sitting alone, anyways, it just does)

You can't "break" the crying. It's just a stage you gotta go through, like all the others :-) Hold him; he'll learn to trust that you're there when he needs you. He's testing that now. It's a bother, but you can adapt - a carrier like a Baby Bjorn or Mei Tai is perfect at this age. That kind of anxiety lasted for a while for our daughter -- until about 11 or 12 months when she began to walk.

I think you should let him struggle for a few minutes each day when he is "trying to do situps" -- with practice he'll figure out what he needs to do to get himself into a sitting position alone. My daughter was sitting on her own at 6 months and crawled at 7.5 months, which is very average.

This is a very frustrating age!! My son started this phase at 4 months. He would scream when I put him down. He hated "tummy time" or anything that didn't involve being held! At 5 months I gave him a "blankie" to hold while I rocked or held, or fed him, and now at 9 months I can put him & "blankie" in the crib and he will go right to sleep. Try giving him something else to comfort him/attach to besides you. My son started sitting and crawling at 8 months. He became more independant when he learned to crawl & didn't want to be on my lap as much. However he is still a momma's boy and wants his share of time being held still! Just be patient don't pick him up every time he cries, instead offer him a toy, or get on the floor and play with him. He needs to learn you can't hold him all day & that he can occupy himself while you are busy with other things. Hope this helped! Good Luck!

My daughter became very attached and fretful at 5 months....its a tough age, they're starting to realize there is more to this world than the little area we put them and their little bodies aren't ready to let them be mobile. But the more eager they are to explore the quicker they learn to get those little arms and legs going. Crawling usually happens anywhere from 6 months to never. My girl is 8 months and isn't at all interested in crawling....she'll scoot and she'll walk assisted, but no crawling.

My baby is 5 months old now and is the same, wanting to be independant!!! He's always wantin to sit up, supported a bit of course. Always trying to sit up by practicing sit-ups and is a definate mummies boy. Just leave them when u go out the room, as long as they are safe! they'll soon get used to it and learn to amuse themselves for 5 minutes, thats what I did and I can do housework, eat my dinner and do the bottles and he just plays, rolls around and know's Ill give him cuddles as soon as Im done.
