My one month old daughter had been really fussy today and straining to poop. She just pooped and it was just a little and it was hard. Like a rabbit pellett type poop but larger about one inch. Should I call the doctor? Or is this okay?

When ever mine got constipated, I just put a capful of prune juice in her formula. Formula is notorious for causing constipation.

How old is your baby? If she is starting on solids this is very normal. My daughter has these kinds of poops all the time. It isn't something I would call the doctor about...but you might mention it at your next visit if your daughter isn't on solids. Formula also could cause this kind of bowel movement. When to call the doctor: If there is blood in the stools, or your baby hasn't gone to the bathroom for 3-4 days. Once your little one gets all of her poop out she will feel better and not be so fussy (we've gone 7 days without a bowel movement...and oh we were moody...but I would be too.) We were told by my doctor to add a little pear juice to some water and give it to our daughter (2 oz) we were also told to put a teaspoon of corn syrup in 2 oz of water for our daughter if that didn't work. If all else fails, get some baby prune juice and try this. I would do this last. I've had bad results...it just made my daughter more fussy and upset her tummy more. But 1 hour later the bowel did pass. Good luck

My son's poop is often like this since about 4 months. The doctor said to give him 2 oz of pear juice a day. This helps a lot!! He won't drink the pear juice straight, but if I "hide" it in milk he has no problems. They also recommend inserting a thermometer rectally and gently moving it in a circular motion if he's having trouble pooping. This only ever worked once for us, but that is just our baby!

this is normal for kids to get a little stopped up from time to time. call your pediatrician and get some advice from them since THEY are the professionals. They didn't go to medical school to just hand out bandaids and lollipops. they'll more than likely tell you to get some glycerine suppositories and use a small piece of the tip to help with the constipation, and flavor a bottle of water with a capful of juice and give some of it to the baby. Seriously, it's better to ask dumb questions to the doctors and nurses and get a correct answer than just ask a bunch of yahoos that may or may NOT know a single thing about children, OR medicine. It's easier to answer a question than try to prevent a more serious problem than have to fix a problem they COULD have known about days earlier.

My son did the same thing. I had tried 3 different formulas until finally, my doctor said to give him 2 ounces of infant prune juice and mylicon drops...I HAVE A DIFFERENT BABY!!! He's happy, no more hard poops...no more gas pains.

It sounds like she's constipated. Just try mixing a capful of prune juice into her milk. My friend said that works for her baby. I've never had to try it since my son hasn't been constipated or anything yet, but she said it works wonders.

It's really not ok, but it is not bad either.
Give the baby some glucose water. It is about 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon or so of corn syrup in about 4 ounces of slightly warm water.
Or put some prune juice in a little water to thin it down.
Try one of those when she is hungry. Always worked for my kids.
