One very important bit of advice (for us) was, get in the habit of using one (or two, or three, or even four) email addresses ELSEWHERE so's you don't have to change your email address every time you change your ISP.

Like, we use our Yahoo! email for business and advertising, our gmail for purely personal, msn for Microsoft maintenance access, and like that... Then we forward our ISP email to one of those and whenever we change our ISP we don't have to notify all our friends - they keep sending to Yahoo! or gmail or msn or whatever...

For ISP, if you have dsl, I recommend covad. For dialup, Consumer Reports has always liked Juno.

Earthlink is very widespread, expensive, and their software really eats into your system; they own PeoplePC. Others will advise you otherwise, but IMHO, avoid them. Avoid AOL and AT&T like the plague.
