Liters are Metric
Gallons are Standard
A Liter is the base unit of Volume in the Metric Sistem.
Ever hear of a milliliters (aka mL)?
That is 1 Liter, split up 1000 times.
1 liter is about the size of 1 plastic bottle of Club Soda.
Were as Gallon are not a base, there is no pattern to it, and it is just 4 quarts.

1 gallon is approx 3 3/4 litres an 'old UK gallon' is different to a 'gallon', but the gallons you would use in the UK nowadays are the same as a US gallon - 8 pints litres are the same the world over a gallon is 8 pints a gallon is 3.785 litres if you want to be exact this is correct, dont bother with the previous 2 answers.... they are JUST PLAIN WRONG!!!
