I'm asking this because some people think the holocaust was way worse than slavery. I however disagree because I thought I had heard before that somwhere near 3 million black people died on the way over here. Is this true?

The two shouldn't be compared.

There is no way to get an accurate figure for either tragedy. Only estimates and opinions.

Do you have any idea how many ships it would have taken to transport that many people? A wooden sailing ship, which required a fairly large crew, and the cargo, and the food, and the water.....for a voyage that took MONTHS. The truth is, no one knows how many blacks were sold, BY OTHER BLACKS, by the way, into slavery. Who do you think made the slave trade possible, besides the Europeans who financed it, and furnished the ships? They did not supply the product.....black tribes, living on the coastal areas of parts of Africa, sold inland blacks to the Europeans, and guided slavers to places where they could get more....for gold and trade goods. They sold their own. And don't forget, slavery still exists in Africa.....only the white world felt guilty enough to stop.
As horrible a sin as slavery was in North America, most of the people who died in the Holocaust were also made slaves. Slavery is not a color issue. And if you are going by the numbers, and you think 3 million is accurate, although I don't know where you can have gotten the figure, over TWELVE million died in the Holocaust. Six million is an approximate number of Jews, but they were not the only people murdered in the camps. Jews, gypsies, Catholics, Protestants, physically and/or mentally handicapped, and anyone who opposed National Socialism.....the list was endless. The only element of slavery that was worse was that slavery has been going on since the beginning of time, and shows no signs of being eliminated. The Holocaust lasted less than ten years.

That would mean 3 million blacks died over 246 years vs 12 million Jews and other ethnic groups over 5 years. At the height of American slavery there were about 4 million slaves, or 1/3rd of the south's population. Sure they were treated horribly, but if you look at the numbers the Holocaust was much much more damaging to its victim.

According to digital history: At least 2 million Africans--10 to 15 percent--died during the infamous "Middle Passage" across the Atlantic. Another 15 to 30 percent died during the march to or confinement along the coast. Altogether, for every 100 slaves who reached the New World, another 40 had died in Africa or during the Middle Passage.
