Back in February I had a friend call and his PC's were not working. I took both of them and left him a router which he said he would pay for and also told him he could borrow my daughter's laptop because I knew it would be a while before I would have time to even sit down to look at his computers.

Well It took me months to sit down to even look at them. I had a surprise pregnancy which let's just say really took it's toll on me. I'm finally due to give birth any day now.

I did fix his pc's.

I've been trying to get a hold of him and have only been successful one time and that is when I called his work # from a blocked line. He told me he would call me the next day but he didn't.

I have left NUMEROUS messages and I am pretty distressed now. He will not call me back.

What do I do? He has a good job and can certainly afford to buy his own laptop. This is my 12 year olds laptop and it's almost 2 years old.

What should be my next step?

Thanks for any suggestions.

He is supposed to pay me for the work. At this point I don't even care, I just want the laptop back for my daughter.

I was wondering if I should call the police and report it as a possible theft.

I'm about to have a baby any day now and just wanted to get this all taken care of before the baby came and he knew that.

Thanks, I appreciate the answers.

I do still have his 2 pc's which I want to return to him too. They are older then the laptop so he obviously does not care.

I can't just throw them in the car waiting 4 him to call because the weather has gotten cold here and I don't want to expose them to the cold. Heck, I can't even carry them to the car myself right now.

It sounds like he's dodging you. Was he supposed to pay you for fixing the computers? Send him a certified letter, detailing all your attempts to get in touch with him and his lack of respons and follow-through. Tell him that his computers are fixed, and that you need your daughter's laptop back. Tell him he has 2 weeks to arrange a meeting with you to return your daughter's laptop and get his computers (and pay you for your work if that was part of the deal). Tell him if he doesn't comply, you will sue him if necessary.

Good luck,

I'd say that between the two answers you've received previously, you've got the next steps you need to take. Write and send the certified letter, including a bill for the work done on the PCs, and if he doesn't respond within the time you specify, file in small claims court.

Sue him for the fair market value of the laptop and router in your local small claims court. It's quick, easy and cheap, and you don't need a lawyer (In most States you're not even allowed one)

Note that a small claims court can only award you the VALUE of the laptop, they can't order it returned.
