was better than their first. (second or subsequent albums will do if that makes it easier). This is kind of in response to Sookie's question a few days ago.

The ones that come to my mind are Smashing Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream", Radiohead's "The Bends", and one many of you may not have heard, Bell X1's "Flock" (their third album).

lovnrckets:
Yeah, they're not very well known outside of Ireland. Great band, although I don't think they'd be your bag :)

Sookie:
I'd have a very hard time choosing between Vs. and Ten. Definitely a tough call.

Great choices, don't know how I forgot about The Colour and The Shape. I'll have to check out Dinosaur Jr. in the future.

Definitely agree about Aha Shake Heartbreak being better than Youth and Yound Manhood. I haven't decided if I like Because of the Times best or not yet though. And yeah, Gish is great, I was actually listening to it in the car today.

Muse, of course. Although Showbiz is still amazing in my books. And while you're here, let's not forget about Agaetis Byrjun. So much better than Von.

Singers count in my books, I always just find it easier to say band. For some reason I always thought Another Side of Bob Dylan was his second album. Oops!

:)

The reason that I posted that question was because I could think of so many bands that had great second albums. I won't say that no one was a victim of the "Slump", but it just hasn't been my experience:

Deftones - Around The Fur
Pearl Jam - Vs.
Morphine - Cure for Pain
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (agreed :)
Live - Mental Jewelry (they released an album under the name "Public Affection")
Velocity Girl - Simpatico (though I love Copacetic too)
Faith No More - Introduce Yourself
Everclear - Sparkle and Fade

I guess it's all a matter of opinion, though. :)

Edit: rukrym - I agree that PJ is a tough call. The material off of Ten is classic, but I think the recording of Vs. is better. That's just my preference, though - I can understand why some fans like the first album more.

huevo - agreed about the Foos. Their sophomore release is my favorite by them.

conie - I agree. :)

The first albums that came to mind for me were the two you mentioned, The Bends and Siamese Dream. Dinosaur Jr's sophmore album You're Living All Over Me also fits this category. Dinosaur was a good album but YLAOM ranks up in my top 3 albums ever put out. Meat Puppets II far outshines their debut album with such classic tracks as Lake Of Fire and Lost.

Other albums include:

Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising (absolutely overrated ) vs. Confusion Is Sex (still good) (These are their first two full length lp's)

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique is an absolute classic

Foo Fighters - I enjoy the first album but The Color & The Shape is my favorite they put out

Janes Addiction - Nothing's Shocking :)

Edit: Generally I can make a solid choice about whether I like the first or second album more. The one band that eludes me though is Fugazi. Is it 13 Songs or is it Repeater? I have a feeling for the rest of my life I will never be able to make a definitive answer on that.

Whoops, I screwed up. I meant Bad Moon Rising is underrated.

Like you, the first two that come to mind are "Siamese Dream" and "The Bends." Both are two of my favorite albums to this day. :)

I don't know how I feel about the Pearl Jam response. I loved Vs., but Ten? Oh my God - just brilliant.

Other than that, I'd have to say that Dave Matthews Band's Under The Table and Dreaming is better than Remember Two Things.....

I'm having a hard time with this one. Mostly because I can't keep things straight, and I forget which album came before which.....

Ágætis Byrjun > Von from Sigur Ros
Spiderland > Tweez from Slint
Wonderful Rainbow > Ride the Skies from Lightning Bolt
Freaky Styley > Self-titled from Red Hot Chili Peppers

I also agree about Radiohead and the Shins

Fun House by the Stooges is a fantastic album that is often considered superior to the first. I just don't want to say it because I love both albums so much.

Members of the Sonics have said they think Sonics Boom is overall a stronger album than Here Are The Sonics.

Lust For Life by Iggy Pop most agree is a highp oint of his solo career and better than The Idiot (which is also good).

T.Rex's Electric Warrior is an absolute classic but I prefer the sophomore effort The Slider.

Put me down for "many of you" since I've never heard of Bell X1. This is sort of subjective in nature but I'll go with overall opinion rather than my own.

Tool - Ænima is better than Undertow.
Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses was their third album but better than the prior two combined.
Sleater-Kinney - Call The Doctor was their career highpoint.

Emo Murderer - Opiate was not an album but rather an EP. Therefore, Undertow was their first ACTUAL album.

Rukrym - OK, just heard some samples of Flock. Sounds a little like a mellower version of Franz Ferdinand. Not bad.

Bob Dylan's first album was his self-titled, his second was the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan...The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is considered by many to be his best (or at least the top 3) period.

Edit: oops, you said band not singer...then I'll go with The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other by Van Der Graaf Generator. The Aerosol Grey Machine was their first, but wasn't really by the band...it had been for a solo album for Peter Hammill. And with the second one, the band had access to a lot of equipment which they took full advantage of.

i'd say Kings Of Leon's 2nd album was better than the first, though i know a lot of people that would argue with me on that one. Rasputina also has a way of making every album better than it's subsequent albums. I'm never disappointed with them. I agree that Siamese Dream as a better follow up to Gish, though Gish is a great album.

I have no idea, really. Though The Beatles' last albums were the best! The sound they had before they broke up was so emotional and beautiful and awesome. Haha. For some reason I keep thinking Abbey Road was their last album even though it was Let It Be. Abbey Road probably just stands out to me.
