Are you referring to the mitre? This is part of the ceremonial clothing the Pope wears. It has historical significance going back to the early days of the church.
The Pope is considered to be the Bishop of Rome. He wears the mitre - which was a ceremonial headdress worn by bishops. Notice he also carries a shepherd's staff- because the Pope is the earthly shepherd to the world's Catholics.

Although I am not a religious person, I have to say that the answers so far have been quite disrespectful, especially considering that he is "THE' Pope. I do no find any humor in some of the answers, though for some reason, you may find it amusing to make fun of this person. He is someone to be respected, and many people would be very offended a couple of remarks which have been made. Please don't do this.
