Obviously most of you would like to be known as Scottish (fill in your own nationality as appropriate) etc. first and foremost - nothing wrong with that.

But, I'm curious, would your second choice be to be refered to as, for example Scottish and European or Scottish and British (again, fill in your own nationality)? Explainations would be nice too.

The reason I didn't say English is because most of the world does that annoying thing of presuming England and Britain is the same thing. I'm English and I get annoyed for the people of our other nations on their behalf when other nations do this. I don't think being called English or British to an English person is such an issue. I feel for the other nations who must feel that their own country and traditions get swallowed by the banner of 'English/British' at times.

I'm Scottish followed by British, then European.

There is nothing wrong with being English, I just am not English (or Welsh or Irish). I get annoyed when people use "English" when they mean "British" - it's not just foreigners who do this - some English people do it too.

Some Scots, Northern Irish and Welsh object to being called British as they see it as a term forced upon them through various defeats by the English.
Confusingly, I think of myself as a Scottish citizen of The United Kingdom.

I don't see myself as Scottish, cause i'm a mix of English and Scottish, so i'm a British mongrel, meaning English people hate me and so do Scottish

EDIT
Yes, most people (Americans) associate Britain with England and tea and crumpets which is stupid

I'm Welsh, and very rarely do you get the opportunity on formal papers to call yourself other than British, so I suppose my second choice would be British, but that's because I'm so used to it!
If I'm abroad though, and someone asks where I'm from, I'll say Wales, then you get a puzzled look and I just say UK, then a (half) penny drops, and they say ahh, Wales in England!!!!!!!

I've never really thought of myself as European (sounds so sexy!), it really doesn't narrow your nationality down very well though, you could be from anywhere! : )

I may well be english.. but first and foremost, I am British and proud of this Island in which a multitude of cultures has come together and lives together peacefully.

Don't blame the English for getting your nationality wrong. Stand up for yourselves....Scottish, Irish and Welsh are so proud of their countries......lucky them. So patriotic.

i'm scottish then british. i don't think of myself as european, then the powers that be in Brussels might tell me to change my accent or stop eating porridge. it can be annoying when people think britain is england or scotland is a region in england.
