I would try actually talking to your landlord about the situation.
After all, it's of no benefit to him for you to stay there unable to pay rent.
Perhaps if you do the work of leasing the place (by placing an ad on Craiglist) he will even give you your deposit back if there's not a lapse in rent.

You have to get everything straightened out with the management of the property where you live. They may let you out, but they don't have to. Check your lease contract and see if there is anything in there for this case.
The other way to do it is place an add in the newspaper or make postings on craigs list about subletting. As long as the property management does not miss a payment through your lease term you're not in trouble. You may end-up subletting the place for less then you pay, so you may still have to pay the management something.

It depends on what the specifics are in the lease.
Can you find a subletter to take it over? Is it allowed in the lease? Talk to your landlord and maybe you can both reach a compromise.
In the meantime, look for work (obviously). Do you get unemployment benefits? are you eligible for welfare? Research all your options, but do not skip out on the lease, or you could be sued.

If you have the standard rental lease, then you don't really have an out. What you need to do it talk to the landlord and let him/her know the situation. They will help where they can. Maybe you can sublet, or find a new tenant, maybe a room mate to help out. First things first, talk to the landlord.

Yes, please talk to the landlord. If you can't pay, he probably doesn't want you there.
