Surprisingly,no body corrected you before answering your question. If you question relates to rising petrol prices and so on,then the correct term would be 'Recession' ie a temporary slowdown in economic activities. In a globalized economy,no matter what happens anywhere,it's effects are proportionally felt every where and Britain is no exception. As of now,America is not formally under recession but may be heading towards it in the near future but no one is sure about it.

Yes, collectively, America is in a state of mental and emotional depression. Economic depression lies ahead. I love America, even though I am a Canadian. I have travelled quite a bit in the U.S.; 16 or 17 states, I think. This in no way makes me an expert but over the course of the 30 years that I have become somewhat familar with the country, I have seen a real change in attitudes towards the rest of the world and their place in it, and attitudes towards each other within their country. I like Americans and their country. But if you apply the basic symptoms of depression of the individual and make the leap to a country as a whole, this is what I see. First off, depressive people are unable to take responsibility for their situations and make decisions. This does not suggest they do not want to, it means that they do not see the many options available to them. In other words, options to solve problems no longer seem appropriate because a depressed mental state does not allow for creative and critical thinking. For instance, America rarely talk to their enemies. They bomb them instead, hoping that if they keep bombing them maybe they will stop hating America. A second indicator in my mind is the inability to sleep. Depressed people often experience long sleepless periods were they are sometimes even afraid of sleep because they feel they will become more vulnerable. Their minds race with all sorts of thoughts. America is like this right now. The country is very afraid of doing something that might seem to be "letting down its guard". Paranoia is setting in and it is not good for the country or the world. Why? Because the world needs and wants a strong America. A final point in my pop psychology analysis is linked to the second and that is that depressed people usually see physical and health problems in minor ailments and illnesses. Today in America - just watch CNN or Fox - one could be led to believe that a demon lurks in every shadow: the news is all about child molesters and murderers, suspicious packages, posionous toys from China, evil dictators in other countries, violent and diseased immigrants . . . need I go on? The country has made 9/11 its new "beginning", or rather their new "end" of the innocent world. Everything is seen through the lens of what happened that day. America is turning on itself and is scared of everyone else.
Now to the second part of your question. How will Britain be affected? Well, if they are smart they will care and help America, but also understand that being a strong part of Europe is important, and that is the way forward right now. As their Empire fell 100 - 150 years ago, Britain went through what America is going through now. Take note America, being the number world power never lasts forever. And take note China, when you assume the top dog status, the clock will start ticking on your empire, too.
Your final comment on the rise of petrol prices is important. I am glad to see prices skyrocketing. It will force innovation and technological advancements that will help us get into rehab and fight this addiction to oil. We can put humans on the moon, do surgery on tiny feotuses, dive to the deepest trenches in the ocean, clone sheep and teach monkeys to smoke and eat with a fork; surely we can invent technologies that will not kill our planet.

America is not going througha 'depression'. What's happening is a house price crash. That is, a slow down in the rate of rise of house prices. In some parts of US this means a downturn in house prices which is leaving a lot of folk with negative equity. I heard on the BBC that something like 2-million Americans have had their houses repossessed by the mortgage lender companies - so guess there are a lot of people feeling 'depressed' and having to struggle to make ends meet.
House prices are already starting to come down here in UK. In particular at the top end of the market where house prices in the six million plus bracket are starting to lose value. A lot of billionaires are looking outside UK to invest money in property.
The oil price keeps going up on a daily basis. This means higher prices at the pumps.
Here in UK that band of artisans who brought the country to a stand-still some years ago and forced the UK.gov to reduce the tax/duty on gas at the pumps, are already gearing up for another slow ride down the motorways. This time they are getting backing from big business. So, if you've got a car and need it for work, my advice is you fill the tank right full every day and keep a spare gallon in a can somewhere away from your house but in a safe location. Mine is always buried in the garden about 20 gallons of it. Cannot be too careful.
Good luck to everyone and take care.

Financially, what happens in the US has a huge bearing on us.
When the Dow Jones falls, our Markets follow suit, this changes many things, house prices, mortgage rates, and so on...

Well we americans do get depressed from time to time and that sometimes causes us to be very irritable.
Especially when we encounter people who do not use the proper term or expression.
Now, what would you like to know about our recession?
