Hey. One of my best friends called me last night and invited me to Christmas Dinner with her and her family. She didn't like the thought of me being alone on Christmas (no family) so she invited me to spend it with hers. I'd like to get a really nice gift for her Dad and his wife as a thank you for inviting me to have Christmas Dinner with them. Anyone have any ideas? They are in their late 50's - 60's, if that would make a difference. I don't know them all that well, so I wouldn't want anything TOOOO personal - if that makes sense. I'm usually pretty good with this kind of thing, but I'm drawing a complete blank! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I always get one of two things--flowers and/or wine. I like to get something that is consummable or doesn't last too long (flowers) so that if it's not in their taste they won't have to worry about passing it along to someone else :)

I think a $12-15 bottle of wine would be nice; if they don't drink alcohol, I've taken a box of chocolates or sparking cider (a nice one).

Don't get them flowers -- that requires them to stop "hosting" in order to find a vase that will fit and then they have to cut the stems and put the flowers in water, then they have to clear off some space somewhere to find a place to display them. The idea behind a hostess gift is to give the recipient something to show your gratitude -- not to have them do extra work related to the gift.

Some nice hostess gift ideas include:
Fancy soaps
Bottle of wine (if they like wine)
Anything gourmet -- like chocolates, sauces, tapenades, etc.
Decorative hand towels
Candles

Here are some other ideas:

Make a whole basket, or, pick one item and wrap it beautifully.

I think that a fruit and nut gift basket would be very nice. Or you could go with a nice cookie/candy tower. I'm sure your friends parents will greatly appreciate the gesture.
Hope you have a great Holiday Season!!

Sorry about you not having any family......It depends on how much money you are willing to spend. For instance, if you are willing to spend $40 or more, then you could get them a set of crystal (genuine) wine glasses. If you are planning on spending less than $40, then maybe a fruit/gift basket would be nice.

A box of Godiva chocolates, and make sure to tell them it's for them to enjoy later-that way they won't feel obligated to open them for that day. Or a holiday flower arrangement from a florist that they can just plunk down somewhere and not worry about finding a vase, etc.

You could ask your friend if her parents drink alcohol. If so, a nice bottle of wine, in a basket with some cheeses and crackers is good.
How about some holiday kitchen towels in a basket with scented candles.

What about something for their home. You do not have to get personal with an inscription.

My mother loved this last year!! of course, mine was mushy to my mom. I only have their wedding page marked, but you can go from there.

This company personalized wind chimes, you can say anything, show your love, blessings, whatever. They even have an inscription page if you cant think of anything to say. Or just use their names " welcome to the home of ______ and ______"

Great selection of chime colors, sizes, and different wind sail shapes.
