yes you can....

magic is a performing art. You major in theater or theater arts to study the art of performing in public.

It's not unlike the way that not all art majors are painters (some are photographers or sculptors), not all theater/performing arts majors are actors (some are comedians, directors, set designers or, like me, costumers)

You shall do what Penn and Teller did, get an education. Penn graduated from Clown College (look it up!) and Teller had a more traditional education and even taught for a while before becoming an illusionist par excellence.

Of course, you'll want to go somewhere that has a theatre program, preferably a BFA where they incorporate a lot of off-center performance techniques. UNLV comes to mind--you'd be close to the big-time stage-show action of the sort you want (Blue Man Group, Cirque du Soliel, and yes even Penn and Teller), there's a big stage combat convention that meets annually in Lost Wages, and there's lots of off-campus work for anyone competent in running lights or setting props.

You'll want to develop your skills as an actor as broadly as you can--you might not get lots and lots of work as a magician to start out, and so being able to work commercials and trades and regional theatre can help pay the bills. Also remember that Harry Anderson started out doing comic-magic schtick and wound up making his millions from playing the lead on Night Court--so you have to be prepared for what opportunities may present.

Being in show business is about marketing yourself and managing your business. Study business and marketing in college. A lot of people become famous and have no idea how to manage their money. If you go to college to learn this, you will be very successful.

Nothing's going to stop you from attempting both. One of the guys from Weezer's going to Harvard. A dude from Iron Maiden has an advanced degree in history.
