I work for a manufacturer and we are machining some aluminum. In doing the machining the shavings are coming off like curly q's or even curly hair. They would be really neat to use in a craft. What kind of ideas does anyone have to use these for?

The shavings are about 1/4" wide and can be up to a foot long or better. We are recycling a lot of them however, as a crafter I wanted to see what kinds of ideas other people have for them.

I have seen those and they are very inspirational, but also very dangerous. Maybe you could build a big sculpture and use it, and then keep it in a place where people can't get too close to it. How about a large mound made of portland cement, with the curlicues stuck into it?
But the company may not let you take them because they are making money by selling them to a recycler.

For Aluminium you could probably collect it and recycle it. Some recycling centers that deal with metal will actually pay you by the pound. Aluminium is worth more than scrap steel and iron pound per pound.
If you find yourself machining Magnesium I would keep some shavings aside. Magnesium can be used as a fire starter. Great for camp fires when using a flint and steel method or with wet tender. The draw back to this is it burns extremely hot and bright when ignited

make sure you wear a mask when shaving so you don't ingest aluminum, there are studies that link ingestion with alzheimer's. Other than that, glue it onto a piece of paper, frame it and shine a light on it, probably look nice.

There are kits around that do use metal offcuts/metal strands.
Any good Hobby Shop may have them.
I don't think you could use the shavings you are describing, because they may have very sharp ends/edges.

if they're big enough, hang them on the end of a windchime. If not, then glue them on picture frames or something.
