I wait and see what will come up. As we know things are NEVER what they seem.
Like in my field of work, a good doctor is not the one that speaks well and is dressed well, the good one is the one that does not panic during an emergency.
an honest guy is not the guy who talks allot about honesty, he's the guy that would not take that 100 $ bill on the counter even if no one is watching.

Honestly, I don't believe that saying, but I do think first impressions are important. I don't care about physical appearance, but I have to say that I certainly would be disturbed by a purple mohawk and extensive body tattoos! However, I don't form a final opinion or judgment about a person till after I have really known them better. That is, after talking and getting to know each other for a period of time. Lots of times, appearances can be very deceiving.
I judge the person according to their behaviour, manner of speech, opinions, character, how they interact with others ... I mean how they are in general as human beings, not how they look.

The phrase is good in theory but empty for all practical purposes. Like many people here said already, first impressions are critical and are often enduring. A first date, job interview, or even a television sound bite are examples.
Most people, aside from close friends and family, do not have the time to discover the totality of your individual worth. They are strangers who meet with you briefly and hope to obtain a good enough impression to decide if they should invest more energy and time in a relationship with you. It's all about allocating scarce resources--do you want to risk the chance with this one person after a glimpse of his value, or do you want to see what other persons can offer?
I don't believe in the reliability of superficial judgments, but I'm just one person.

The looks do tell me a lot about this person's character, but there are lots of other criteria and lots of other things to take in consideration, like when I see a book with a black cover and some scary picture on it I'll know that this book is not about romance or love and probably is a horror book, I can't however tell whether this book is good or bad or what exactly does it talk about

the cover of a book tells me the title, the author , the publisher, and perhaps a phrase about the content of the book.
the same applies to a person that i meet for the 1st time.
one look would tell me :
the way he is dressed
the way he speaks or keeps silent
his/her body language
perhaps his work, family, background
these provide me with my 1st impressions.
following encounters would tell me more about the person.
my opinion of the person would be better formed after i see him/ her in action, doing or refusing to do something,
being or not being helpful to others , being or not being a positive factor among my acquaintances , etc
the sort of final judgment of a book comes after i have read it to the last page.
this cannot take place with humans bec i wont wait till he/ she comes to an end of life.
but i form a good idea of the person after contact.
however, i usually find that my 1st impression is the right one .

more than 90% of the time you can judge a book from its cover yes..Other criteria are other stuff which is relevant to you (the judger) i mean, if the person is a work colleague you ll focus on certain things which will differ than a friend, a relative etc..

there's some things that u can deduce from the other person's looks,i don't mean his features,i mean the way he dress, the way he look,it may tell me if he's arrogant,or careless or a flirt..keda y3ny.
after i wait till they open their mouth, and sometimes i am really shocked because talks don't match the looks,so, i can't judge the book by its cover, maybe after the introduction :D

when i meet a person i try to judge a person first with his appearance, which includes clothes, posture and the way he or she behaves.
Then i gradually talk to that person and try to find out what he or she believes in and their perception of things around them and then finally i decide as to what kind or person he or she is
