Le Grand Chemin (The Grand Highway)
I sometimes go to Blockbuster and pick ones that look interesting. I have seen 5-7 of them and can't remember the names, one about a couple who meet online and have an ongoing affair in a hotel, one about a young girl who plays piano competitively and is sabotaged by another contestant, (someone here may recognize the plot and know the names.) I think as a general rule, foreign films are so much better than most American movies I see. There is more of a plot and the acting seems so much more real and authentic, nothing seems forced. And the accents just lure me into the story that much more!

Hi. Get yourself a copy of the film "Jour de Fete" with the main actor Jacque Tati. The film was made in 1947 and is in black and white and is the forerunner of modern slapstick comedy as we know it. Watch it two or three times so that the plan of the film eventually gets to you, it shows all emotions and all happenings in our lives in small parts. I saw this film first in 1948 and still laugh when I watch it now. There are copies of the film for sale on E-bay auction site.

8 women is a great film of recent times..its a comedy about 8 women of a household all suspects in the death of the man of the house.
a hard days work is my favorite though..a bit dated though. a couple set out on a mission to kill all 12 members of a jury that sentenced to death there son(who was guilty).its a black comedy.
ma vie is another good one.
there are many more that i have loved. im such a big fan of french films but i never remember the names of them.

Le Placard with Daniel Auteuil (very funny)
Ponette (very sad)
Train de Vie (beautiful/funny/sad)
Le dîner des cons (funny/sad)
There are some excellent Québec French films (and Québec is a Canadian province, not a colony):
Bon Cop, Bad Cop
Le Déclin de l'Empire Américain (and sequel Les Invasions Barbares)
Camping Sauvage
There are some really kick-a** action films, but I can't remember them off-hand, except one that stars Jean Reno (Crimson Tide is the English title).

My favourites are Amelie, La Belle Noiseuse, Le Mepris, 8 femmes, Une femme est une Femme. Infact, any Jean Luc Goddard is worth a watching! :)
Haha! And as for the aforementioned 'Baise Moi', its practically an ill-scripted porno! I couldn't believe my Mum took it out my collection and binned it! :O. I, mean, I was 18, then. Old enough to buy filfth!

Le dîner des cons (English title: The Dinner Game) is my favorite. Very, very funny. A bit poignant and sad at times, but it's just hysterical.
La Femme Nikita is pretty interesting too, especially if you ever watched the series on television.
