Some bugs inject/produce venom or toxins that enter your body when stung or bitten.Your bodies response in to produce histamine which is sent to the source of the bite to swell up the affected area and stop the venom/toxin from spreading

Because when a mosquito bites you it sucks out your blood with its long mouth and puts some kind of bacteria back into your skin which swells up and itches.
