As long as the debt is owed to Americans it is a matter if inter-generational bookkeeping and the effect on the economy and the financial markets, That is when interest is paid or the bonds paid off the money gos into the American economy, so there is no net loss but future taxpayer will have higher taxes, but if the money is spent wisely they will also have more income and a better life, I am more than happy to pay the debts accumulated to fight WWII, or to build the interstate highway system. Debt can also be a tool to reduce the severity of recessions and the loses that occurs from them but excessive debt can drain the private capital markets killing new investments. But our current deficits are being use for consumption and borrowing money that is needed for private investment, and even worse we owe more and more of our debt to foreign nationals, so the debt will make America poorer in the future.
