Benevolent sexism is a chivalrous attitude toward women that feels favorable but is actually sexist because it casts women as weak creatures in need of men's protection.

Benevolent sexism may seem harmless, noble, or even "romantic," but its effects can be devastating. Benevolent sexism, like hostile sexism, is an ideology that supports gender inequality, and in some ways benevolent sexism can be even more insidious.

Benevolent justifications for discrimination (e.g., "Women should forego a career because they excel at childcare") are more likely to be accepted than hostile justifications (e.g., "Women should forego a career because they lack ability"). Whereas women are more likely than men to reject hostile sexism, they often endorse benevolent sexism -- especially in countries high in hostile sexism, where male protection is most appealing. Ironically, it may be that high levels of hostile sexism among men lead to high levels of benevolent sexism among women.

I would say benevolent sexism is more covert in its destructiveness. It sounds deceptively good on the surface to men and women alike. It's akin to the "noble savage" idea in what you might call "benevolent racism." But a judgment based only on sex or race (whether a good or bad judgment) is still sexist and racist. The problem benevolent sexism creates is twofold. First, it's tough to argue with. Any woman who tries to speak out against notions of female specialness, purity etc is going to come across as a man-hating ***** and give feminism a bad name. On the other hand, if women embrace benevolent sexism while simultaneously believing in feminism, they are accused of holding a double-standard which also gives feminism a bad name. There really is no good way for a feminist to deal with benevolent sexism. Both fighting and acceptance of it create many problems. At least with hostile sexism, women have a rallying point at which they can say "there is obviously something the matter here!" and fight it. And it is difficult for others to disapprove of people fighting overt hostility against them.

Benevolent sexism, as defined by radical feminists, are measured by questions like these:
1). People are happier in life being romantically involved with the opposite sex.
- If a man answers YES, he's a benevolent sexist - so even recognizing his heterosexuality is sexist in a benevolent sense.
2). Men are complete without women.
- If a man answers NO, he loves his wife and isn't complete without his wife, he's a benevolent sexist.

In other words, Benevolent Sexism is completely made up, completely tone deaf to the reproduction of species, and also rejects any notion of biological need / desire to reproduce. It's just one more way feminists try to police behavior and pull allies among "intersectional" groups like lesbians / trans

RE:
what is benevolent sexism?

IF what you say is true, & is wrong, then mothers should stop teaching their sons to "never hit a girl", "protect your sisters", "if you see a man hit a woman, attack the man to protect the woman" etc.
It's primarily WOMEN who teach men to do this, & demand it of them!

Hollywood has been brainwashing society to do this as well, it's all over t.v. shows, movies etc.
If this "benevolent chivalry" is wrong then let the women fight their own battles.
Fact is, most women ARE smaller & weaker than men & DO need our protection in many instances.
It's only because you've been so pampered & protected all your life that you don't understand this.
If this is not true, then when a woman slaps or hits a man he should hit her back. Let women fight their own battles & if it's o.k. for a woman to hit a man for saying something she doesn't like, then it should be o.k. for a man to hit a woman for doing the same thing. That would be "equality". It's female sexism that teaches that it's o.k. for a woman to hit a man but he's not allowed to hit her back. American women don't want equality, they want superiority over men, as if we should be their slaves & their "whipping boys".
American women demand that men risk their lives to protect them & then silly, ignorant, ungrateful ones like you turn around & bash them for it. Why don't you wake up.
