First of all, I am biased. I also want to say to likelyhero that Ovechkin took himself out of the captaincy race last year when it was available after Jeff Halpern left. He stated that he would like to be able to communicate better with all of the other players and referees before he took such an important position on the team. He began to wear the "A" last year at times and when Zubrus was traded to Bufalo, he wore it every game. This year, Ovechkin has worn the "A" all year and has been acting captain in Chris Clarks absence. Besides that, I don't really believe that Crosby is the Captain of that team because he is the best leader. In that case, I would say that it is much more about what the people want than what is necessarily best for the team. That is not to say that he is not deserving, but what else did they have to work with...A guy that refuses to learn english, Sergei "what do you mean that I am a defenseman" Gonchar, and Mark Recchi. Slim pickings if you ask me.
Now for the actual question. This a question is difficult to answer. There are alot of variables that go into this. Who scores more. Ovechkin is by far the better goal scorer. he has moves that make people want to cry. He has a wrister that is insane. Crosby has a very good shot and is a very sneaky skater. He is very fast through the slot and can get off a wrist shot faster than most. Where Ovechkin has the advantage is that he doesn't just go around people or outskate them, he will also go through you and do it with a smile and with style. Advantage Ovechkin 10 to 8.5
Who is the better passer? Crosby has a vision on the ice that is second to none. He can see the pass 5 strides off and improvise if it falls apart. Ovechkin is a power passer, which is to say that he has no real touch, but his vision is quite good. When he learns to feather it in there, He will do more than just 50 assists a year. Advantage Crosby 10 to 8.
Who provides better defense? Crosby is far from a liability in the D zone. He has even been called on to work on the P.K. He uses his vision to anticipate what is going to happen. Ovechkins defense has been praised all year. He has started blocking shots, which as a Caps fan freaks me out. He is using his speed to keep himself out of trouble as opposed to get himself in more trouble like he did last year. Advantage Ovechkin 10 to 9
Who has the better personality. Ovechkin has a personality. That being said...Advantage Ovechkin (sorry had to do that).
With all of the things that I have mentioned above, it has become appearent to me that Ovechkin has at least as much talent and is as good of a player as Crosby. That is not to say that he will have as good of stats, but I think that in the end they will both be enshrined in the hall of fame with multiple cups and Hart trophies each. I will be rooting for Ovechkin! Go Caps!!!

This is not as good a comparison as we might think because Crosby is a natural and amazing center but every line he pivots has world class wingers like Malkin and Staal to put away his passes into the net. Centers naturally have more points than wingers because of all the assists they rack up now Ovechkin is undervalued because he is a winger and only this season they got him a halfway decent centerman in Nylander to play with and Niklas Backstrom will take some time to develop so Ovechkin has had to carry Washington on his back since he got into the NHL whereas in Pittsburgh Crosby has had more than enough support and less pressure as well. The caps are slowly beginning to build a team around Ovechkin who I might remind you won the calder from crosby when crosby was basically given the calder before the season started. Also Ovechkin is a sniper, a pure goal scorer who picks up alot more assists almost as many assists as goals which shows that he is not just a goal scorer but a complete player as well he can play the physical game as well and his defensive game is getting there last season he was -19 at the end of the season and his season he is learning to be more defensively responsible so who is better if pressed I would take Ovechkin because I know he can make it better on his own whereas as with Crosby we don't know whether his numbers would be as good if he wasn't on a team full of number 1 draft picks.

Ovechkin might have won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 06 but Crosby is still the better hockey player. Crosby is also more important to his team or he wouldn't be Captain.......and is does Ovechkin even wear a letter this season?

To anyone who say's they'd rather have Ovechkin on their team, it's a good thing you aren't GM's.
Crosby is better than Ovechkin in all categories, all the intangibles, except size and goal-scoring. Crosby is more valuable to a team.

Im gonna say ovechkin because he can hit, when clark and Semin arent hurt hes got good line mates(he's still got nylander and kozlov) Ovechkin is a better natraul scorere and in the game vs the bolts he protected his empty net by swating away a slapper from St.louis WITH HIS HAND!, then went down and had a scoring chance. The cam zoomed in on his hand and there was a huge bruise(as you can imagine) then the caps had a timeout and ovie stayed on. TELL ME THATS NOT INSANE because if you got hit with a shot like St. Louis' i gaurentee you wouldnt be on the next shift.

You ask me they are both phenominal players but sidney has wicked playmaking skills and that is what made Gretzky a household name, however Ovechkin's one on one ability is something i havent seen since the Pavel Bure days when he just danced around people Ovechkin wins in that area as well as size, Ovechkin can crunch guys into the boards he's very strong on his upper frame Sidney needs some work in that area cause when he gets bunped around he needs to find other teammates around to help him him needs to toughen up but he is still young and he will eventually get stronger he trys to act tough but he just isn't.

Without analyzing their individual play, you can simply take a look at the hardware they've won... So last season, the better player individually was probably the guy who got a trophy for having the most points and two trophies for being the most valueable player (one was from his peers).

Slow afternoon, so I will answer this question in which I usually avoid, because it makes no sense. Which is better cheesecake or an apple? Now, most will say cheesecake, but some health nuts (the less educated who can't read stats) would say an apple. So, please tell me, I know you said "Best Individual", so why not compare Joe Thorton or Vincent Lecavlier to Crosby? Ovechkin is good, but not as good.

In respect to Zam's most funny quote about Ovechkin, which made coffee come out of my nose............
"He would get much more respect if he spoke better English and didn't have a head that looked like pumpkin carved by a 5 year old."
