Yes that is how. They use stuff like sticks and all that. Watch behind the scences on that show where a boy named Jimmy starts seeing cartoon charicters. Anyways good luck figuring it out >.>

most movies that put actors in direct contact with cg characters use green screened live action props(either people in green suits or objects that represent the 3d character or object)
if its another character obviously the green suit actor acts out the scene along with the live person if its an object they use poles and or wires to give the basic movements that cg artist later use to fill in the cg character.

They act. Editing often completes the illusion. Films, if you have not realized it are illusions.
