Yes it is. Dealerships prey on people who aren't knowledgeble. Plus dealerships charge twice what a repair shop would. I would tell the dealership NOT to do ANY work on the car and I would call around to repair shops to get qoutes and see how soon they could get the car in for repair. You could save several hundred dollars by doing this. I would get the woek done ASAP but you can still drive the car for a week or so.

Dealerships overcharge terribly.
These are both easy things to do yourself. If thats not an option than a normal repair shop (doesnt even need ot be one specializing in VWs or Euros) will be fine and much cheaper.

It is high if these are the only things done. Have them give him an itemized statement showing exactly what they did . Was he given an estimate prior to them doing the work? He should have been. If the repairs are substantially more than the estimate, he would have needed to approve them before the work was done. (This is according to the law).

Ask them to breakdown each repair price by parts and labor for each. It's a common trick to lump everything together. Once you have that info, call around to other shops for estimates on the exact same repairs.

I am assuming that part of this charge is for the "90,000 mile check-up" itself...there is probably a specific point of checks that cost a certain amount of money to do prior to them locating these other problems.
