press "alt+space" and then press "N". please note that alt+space means pressing the "alt" and "space" keys down together. ;)

lt-space which opens the pulldown at the upper left corner. Either arrow down to highlight minimize and press enter, or press the N key to minimize the window with focus. Alt-tab to get to the window you want to minimize. You do not minimize the screen, but a window which may be as large as the full screen.
