I'd be very surprised if timing were to issue here. While I agree that it should be checked and that a timing belt replacement along with water pump and thermostat should be done, if they haven't already, timing problems usually arise in the form of loss of power, hesitant acceleration, or a ping from the engine when accelerating. The most common reason that cars die when slowing down to stop, is a vacuum leak. If you feel comfortable, check the timing. These problems can be very hard to diagnose and if the timing is not the culprit, an experienced mechanic may have seen this problem many times and be able to fix it quickly.

number one before you begin start simple. check that all the wires are tight and in the right places.that any screws holding all the wires in place are secure. then check that all the points in your distributer are clean without buildup on them. after that check that your timing belt is not loose. if all of the above are ok then you can see about adjusting your timing. which involves a timing light. if you choose to do this then read your timing light manual carefully. it will tell you where to place your leads and where to look for the timing mark on your flywheel of your engine.

Need a new timing belt and possibly a new water pump... It's NOT an easy job.. The kit is relatively inexpensive but, in most cases the engine has to be completely removed to access the water pump/timing belt... Good luck

If your not fimilar with this you shouldn't do it, you can really mess things up. But if your determined to do it buy a haynes manual and read it first and see what you think of the job.
