activity 1. give them a sheet of paper - A4 is good size for their age.
using waxed crayons get them to colour the whole page in blocks of different colours (a bit like a patch work quilt) the harder they can press the better.
Mix up some black poster paint with fairy liquid.
Paint this all over the coloured paper and leave somewhere warm to dry.
Once dry they can use a pencil to draw their own fireworks on the paper - the pencil removes the black paint leaving the bright colours underneath to show.

activity 2 - using black sugar paper
poster paints in white, yellow, red etc or even flourescent ones.

You will need straws and brushes and old toothbrushes

splatter the paint onto the paper by flicking the brush at it, pinging the tooth brush with your fingers and then blowing the paint around with your straw.

It's only a vague connection, but you could make pinwheels with them. They can colour in the paper then an adult can make it into the pinwheel (there will be plenty of templates online or in library books) and the kids can blow it round - voila, fire-free Catherine Wheel! And then they get something to take home too. However I always loved doing the wax crayon thing as well! Have fun.

when i did work experience at a school we did this thing with the kids where.......they colour a piece of paper in all different bright colours then go over it in a black crayon....then you get some scissors, and scratch off bits of the black crayon so it gives a firework effect, with a black sky and all diff bright coloured fireworks.......obviously help em out with the scissor part! i explained that really badly, but i know what im on about!ha!

you could try them with this, get some black paper or card and a wax candal, and you can draw fire works or anything that the children like on the paper, colour over the paper in reds, yellows, oranges, etc then get something to rub over the colours, (like blunt scissors, like the children use to cut stuff up in school), and scrape along the paper, the effect is cool well it was when i was in the infants anyway have fun

my 5 year old just did pics at school on black paper. Slightly water down some PVA glue, drop some on the paper and use a straw to blow it in different directions. Then sprinkle with different coloured glitters. They look really effective and pretty.

You know, i did something like this before. Try a volcano project, just make a clay base volcano, and put baking soda inside of it. (create a tunnel going downward to fill the baking soda with), then give him a little container of vinegar*, and drop some RED FOOD COLORING* into the vinegar tube(it reacts as "magma"), and when your ready to set the volcano off, pour the vinegar and food dye mixture into the clay volcano with baking soda in it, and watch ! :) ITS AWESOME. i do it all the time haha. And heres a link that you can use for fireworks and volcanic explosion pictures to color in ! :)
hope this was some help
