I'm going to make up a recipe box for someone with all ethnic recipes in it and I thought about buying an unfinished wooden recipe box from a craft store and decorating it somehow. I am artistic and crafty in any way possible and can really do anything to this box, just need some ideas. Any input is greatly appreciated! :)

It doesn't have to be a recipe box either if someone has a better idea.

If you want to get really crafty and creative, you can buy a wood burner and several tips, but that can get very expensive. You can also decorate the box with pictures of just about anything using modgepodge. If done artistically modgepodge can make anything look good.

Naturally the box should reflect the theme of the recipes. You can paint the box and then shellac it so that it will be washable - not in the sink of course, but they should be able to wipe off any drips, and you can do that much easier on a shiny box. Just google that ethnicity, and look at pictures to help you decide what paint colors to use.

If their kitchen is very tasteful and neutral, then just sand the wood and paint only a few stripes, then shellac it with varithane or some other wood varnish.

I would personally paste a series of ethnic foods all over the box, and then decopauge over them, as i did with one I made for my wife. I then hotglued some lace around the top edge
and on the facing , and on the facing I burned in Michelles Recipes GOOD LUCK with your project and creativity

you can buy,(in most craft stores),small wooden cut outs.try buying some ,paint them w/acrylic paint.glue them to the box and finish with a clear coat of spray acrylic to protect it.you can find almost any thing, fruit, figures,or just some small decorations. plastic fruit glued to the top can be nice.

Put a light coat of paint on, then decoupage food all over it.
