Just wondering, why do some people concider it offensive when someone says "Happy Holiday's". I start using this phrase this time of year when I'm talking to cashiers at the check-out. When I come across someone that I haven't seen in a while in the store, ect. I think it more appropriate to say "Happy Holiday's" so that it includes, Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Years. For people that I see on a regular basis and know that I will see closer to each & everyone of these holidays...I wish them a Happy Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New year individually; rather than lumping the holidays together. Also, on my Christmas cards I alway put that I hope they have a Wonderful Holiday Season.
Which do you perfer, & why? Just wondering.
So Happy Holidays,
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving
A Merry Christmas, &
Happy New Year!

Some people are just always looking for ways to be unhappy.
I am pleased by any kind and well intended greeting, even if I do not celebrate that occasion.

Happy holidays is great for a season that last from Thanksgiving to New Year. Also if you're not sure whether someone celebrates Christmas (be considerate of Jews, Hindus, Muslims, atheists). Merry Christmas is what I say when I see somebody within a day or two before, or if they're downtown obviously doing their holiday shopping.
If anybody is offended that I tell them Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, they are welcome to take it up with their families - who are surely tired of hearing about it!

Holiday greeting are a slection of greetings that are often spoken with good intentions to strangers, family, friends, etc...whether its Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, etc. When one wishes to convey a greeting to another regardless of which particular holiday the other may personally observe, the collective phrase "Happy Holidays" is often used as a simple way to refer to all the winter holidays. Smoe controversy has arounsed regarding the phrase "Happy Holidays" as an alleged attempt to diminish Christmas, but that's just silly. Hanukkah should be celebrated as much and as equal as Christmas or any other holiday that falls around the same time of year. By saying Merry Christmas, you could be saying this to a person who doesnt celebrate christmas, they could be celebrating hanukkah. So with saying Happy Holidays, you're pleasing everyone and everyones personal views on this time of year of celebrating. I personally think you can say what you want, as long as HAPPY or MERRY comes first. Because whatever you may be celebrating, everone is celebrating the same thing; time together with your loved ones.
Saying Happy Holidays is also easier than saying Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, or Happy Hanukka, and Happy New Years too!.

I do not find it offensive when someone says "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" but in all honesty I actually do prefer "Merry Christmas" but at the same time I understand since now everyone celebrates Christmas. Stick with "Happy Holidays" as it's your best bet!

but personally speaking for myself
Thanksgving I say " Happy Thanksgiving"
Christmas..."Merry Christmas"
Chanukah..."Happy Chanukah
at the Eid "Eid Mburak"
my greeting suits the Holiday, and I think it shows respect and acceptance of each other to recognized their Holiday

I completely understand how contraversiol this subject is but this is how i feel at the moment.
Well i believe that while everyone is saying that saying "Merry Christmas" offends the people that dont celebrate the holiday. I feel however that how is that going to affect them if they dont even celebrate it. this is absolutely rediculous. You should be able to say Merry Christmas whenever you want.
I know you didnt ask about this but also what about calling a Christmas tree a "Holiday Tree." I think that goes way beyond rediculous.. That however does affend me. Because the people that dont even celebrate christmas dont even talk about a christmas tree so how can it affend them if we call it a christmas tree? thats rediculous!
Well i hoped this answered your question :)
Have a GREAT thanksgiving and christmas and enjoy it. Merry Christmas.

I don't get offended. I find it nice that someone is actually wishing me happy holidays, they could say nothing, but it's polite whatever they say. And if you don't see them on a regular basis saying ' Happy Holidays' covers it all really. But in my opinion i don't think people should be offended because they're saying something nice. So Happy Holidays :)

I guess I am a little offended. In our local area the holiday season is now referred to as Sparkle Season......Hate that one. As a Christian, I say Merry Christmas...Happy Thanksgiving etc. I don't think that others should limit what I want to say. For example, I worked for a company that forbid you to say Merry Christmas.....I just think that it leads to your own beliefs being compromised. I would not be offended if someone wished me a Happy Hanuka...I think our country is to the point that we are all afraid of offending another group, religion, etc. that it is stifling the freedoms of others......

Either is fine. I prefer Merry Christmas and I'm not a Christian. But whatever sentiment you want to give is fine by me. I don't get upset by trivial things like that.
I also used to be a cashier at Walmart and no one was ever offended by me saying Merry Christmas to them.

I really don't care either way what people say to me, I don't take offense. I usually say Happy Holidays only because I have no idea what religion people are, if any, and that covers it. Why would someone be offended by that????
