Ran across your question by coincidence.
Can't normally answer legal questions in other states because it would be the "unauthorized practice of law." (Lawyers gotta keep their monopoly, you know!)

Anyway, fees IN PENNSYLVANIA for a standard Chapter 7 bankruptcy typically run about $1,200, plus about a $300 filing fee, another $100 in mandatory credit counseling, and another $300 if you need a real estate appraisal, for a total of $1,600 to $1,900. Attorneys will usually accept payments in installments, although they are not allowed to file the petition if you still have anything outstanding.

Chapter 13 bankruptcies typically cost one to two thousand more, but you can set up a repayment plan.

Don't let these numbers scare you away. North Carolina will be different from PA, but it'll give you some sense of what you're looking at.

Most bankruptcy attorneys give free consultations. Go see at least two, preferably three, before you settle on one. Don't try to take a short cut when hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars are at stake.

-Regards

The filing fees are the same everywhere: $299 for a C. 7, $274 for a C. 13.

Legal fees vary a lot. C. 7 fees usually range from $500 to $1200. C. 13 legal fees depend on how complicated your case is and sometimes how many creditors you have. Local rules often have a "no-look" fee which a lawyer can charge without getting approval from the court, often around $2,500. Call a few bankruptcy lawyers and ask.

It cost me about $1200 to file--which I think is absolutely ridiculous. Here I was practically penniless and homeless, and had to pay that exorbitant fee. Good luck, it will be over soon.
