Black walnuts have very long taproots and are difficult to transplant. Only small trees under 4' should be attempted and you will need to get as much of the tap root as possible --it may be deeper than the tree is high. Mortality rates will be high.

Walnuts are best obtained as container grown plants.

Fall or Spring. Avoid winter, because the tree can get stressed. Summer can be too hot on the tree.
