Because the Big Wigs that run those industries are not smart enough to "think outside the box". And the government legislators know even less about the web and support them out of ignorance or greed or both.

In 20 years things will change, after the "Old Guard" retires.

Internet is newer and later technology with comparing to Radio and TV signal. This is a big shift from analog signal to digital signal. The TV industry is utilizing the digital signal with HDTV, but the support transmitting stations must be ready to cover all of the areas. The music industry is also on the same boat. They will do it, but they have to overcome the resistance from the older analog industry.

Because people will start ripping their music and videos and their income will fall drastically.

Some media are opening up though, to releasing encrypted 24 hr screenings on their website to paying subscribers.

There is a lot, the most popular one in my opinion is iTune. You can also buy movies online and download it using windows vista - with windows media centre.
